General Vo Nguyen Giap’s Imprints with the Oil and Gas Industry
General Vo Nguyen Giap praised Uncle Ho's soldiers for that after the Southern Vietnam liberation and national reunification, they continued to devote themselves to the cause of building a new and hard industry like the Oil and Gas industry.

28 years ago, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary establishment of the General Department of Oil and Gas, an important event was held, that was the first Science - Engineering Conference of the Oil and Gas industry (from 1st to 3rd November 1985). It was a large-scaled science activity of the entire industry and the beginning of a comprehensive academic information activity, serving the internal requirements while advertising the scientific - engineering achievements by the officials of General Department of Oil and Gas out of the industry, even abroad. It contributed to enhancing reputation and brand of Vietnam Petroleum Industry.

The conference was prepared meticulously for 7 consecutive months since Director Nguyen Hoa issued the Decision 548/QD informing that the Conference would be held in early November of the same year. Leaders of the industry conference included Mr. Le Van Cu, Deputy Director as the Chief; two Deputy Directors, Mr. Bui Hai Ninh and Mr. Truong Thien as Deputy Chief; and other members including Mr. Dang Cua, Head of Drilling – Exploitation Department; Ho Dac Hoai, General Director of Vietnam Petroleum Institute; Mr. Nguyen Van Kha, Deputy Director of the Geophysical Company; Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Geology; Mr. Ngo Thuong San, Deputy General Director of Vietsovpetro Joint Venture; Mr. Tran Ngoc Toan, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Science – Engineering; Mr. Ly Trong, Deputy General Director of the Oil and Gas Construction and Installation Enterprise; Mr. By Van Tu, Deputy Chief of Petrochemical Refining Preparation Division; Mr. Pham Quang Du, Director of the South Petroleum Sub-Institute.

 

It was a great honor for the first Science - Engineering Conference of the Oil and Gas industry to be presented by General Vo Nguyen Giap, Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers in charge of science - engineering. The General made a speech giving instructions to the petroleum work in general and scientific – engineering work in particular for long term. The presence of the General not only expressed the major concerns of the Party and the State leaders for the Oil and Gas industry, but also as an encouragement, motivation for revolution spirit and willpower to all staff of the Oil and Gas industry, who follows the rebuilding of the country after the cause of national liberation, reunification of the older generation that the General is the most typical.

General Vo Nguyen Giap praised Uncle Ho's soldiers for that after the Southern Vietnam liberation and national reunification, they continued to devote themselves to the cause of building a new and hard industry like the Oil and Gas industry. The General advised the Oil and Gas industry was the industry to which the most advanced, modern technologies were applied, so it required every officer, especially young intellectual’s endeavor to learn, to participate in scientific research and improve qualifications and skills to be able to timely capture the latest information and knowledge; never stop learning from experts, rapidly acquire and master the technology.

Penetrated with General Giap’s advices, the officers and employees of the Oil and Gas industry together with the Soviet experts had made outstanding efforts so that less than one year later they could report to the General on their achievements. On 26th June 1986, they successfully exploited the first ton of oil at Bach Ho (White Tiger) Field from the rig MSP-1 and entered Vietnam to the list of crude oil exploiting and exporting countries in the world, asserted a future promising development for national oil and gas industry.

 

In the plenary conference that year, eight reports regarding summary of the scientific - engineering works implemented from 1975 to 1985; summary of the program 22-01 on the State-level scientific – engineering breakthroughs of the oil and gas and orientations for scientific – engineering works in 1986-1990 and 60 scientific reports were presented in the sub-committees.

Besides the academic activities of high quality and adherent to production requirements, the officers of the oil and gas industry during that period also participated in the scientific meetings of the universities, research institutions on related issues such as regional geology, paleontology - stratigraphy, mineralogy - petrography, geochemistry, marine geology, marine geology, geotechnical, geothermal, geomorphology, geophysics, satellite image geology, quaternary geology. Those activities had contributed to improve the professional knowledge of the staff working in scientific research while enabling them to contribute to further enrichment of the specialized scientific results.
